Join us on Friday, August 26th for a morning drive through the Sacramento Valley, making our way north then east, transiting the back roads of the valley floor, then climbing along the Sierra foothills to historic Nevada County and the Empire Gold Mine State Park.

Back by popular demand, this tour reprises our 2019 adventure which promises a spirited drive along country roads to a destination with an interesting history. For those unfamiliar with that history, the mine was the source of the Bourn family fortune which financed such institutions as the Crystal Springs Water Company and the San Francisco Gas Light Company (predecessor to PG&E). Gold from the mine paid for the 600-acre Filoli Estate which was the family's weekend “getaway” in Woodside, a destination of many Diablo tours over the years.

We will assemble at the Premium Outlets in Vacaville. Our route promises some open the throttle and stretch the legs driving plus picture-postcard views. Upon arriving at our destination, we’ll enjoy a picnic box lunch followed by a two-hour private tour of the grounds and the mine.

We have reserved a block of 15 rooms at the quaint Courtyard Suites, conveniently located in “downtown” Grass Valley, less than a mile from the park.

Following our tour, we’ll check into the hotel for some downtime where you can chill by the pool contemplating what’s for dinner at a selection of local restaurants.

Make a weekend out of it. Since our tour takes place on a Friday, you may decide to extend your stay a second night and explore the area. The hotel will offer a discounted rate for a second night. There are tons of things to do and places to explore including natural attractions like the Yuba River, hiking trails, or a drive-up picturesque Hwy 174 to Colfax. Check out the many galleries, artisan jewelers, wineries and tasting rooms, museums, boutiques etc., in Grass Valley and Nevada City.

Dinner:

Whatever your culinary preferences; Continental, Thai, Latin American, a burger, or a pizza and brew, there’s no shortage of excellent restaurants within a short walk from the hotel. Reservations will be made at several restaurants in the area. Sign-ups for those restaurants will occur before the tour of the mine while we are having lunch. Dinner will be out of pocket.

  • 9:00 AM - Assemble at the Vacaville Premium Outlets: Tour participants sign waivers and distribute radios.
  • 9:25 AM - Driver's meeting for Tour Directions and Safety Briefing

Assemble at the Premium Outlets in Vacaville adjacent to the Lacoste Outlet (east side of the property). The Outlets off of Hwy 80 East are roughly 45 minutes driving time from Walnut Creek. Exit at Exit #56 for I 505 N and follow the signs to Orange Drive. Then turn left on Nut Tree Road to the Outlets. There are bathroom facilities on-site and there are several gas stations in the vicinity if one needs fuel.

It will be about 2 hours from the Outlets to our destination.

  • Leaving the Outlets, we’ll enter I 505 North for about 30 miles exiting at County Road 14.
  • Following County Road 14 eastward which becomes State Hwy 113 we’ll eventually turn to the left at the intersection with County Road 102, through the hamlet of Knights Landing.
  • We’ll continue along State Hwy 113 where the road will turn 90° to the right becoming Tudor Road and proceed to the Garden Hwy.
  • We’ll follow the Garden Hwy into Yuba City and over the Twin Cities Memorial Bridge to Marysville where we’ll hook up with Hwy 20 and proceed on to Grass Valley
